Three Simple Conversations
Preparation
Whether or not you will be gathering with others for the three simple conversations offered with this discernment process, you would certainly be best to start with some individual patterns of reflection and prayer as a form of preparation for the conversations. Here is a list of resources for your consideration and possible use.
For Study
The Baptismal Covenant, included with this document
Holy Scripture
- Sunday Readings …you may choose to give special attention to readings from the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel, as assigned for use each Sunday during the Season of Easter …here’s the link: Sunday Lectionary
- Isaiah 52:1-10 …focuses attention on belief that God is actively present among us already and invites us to imagine how we might join in that work more fully
- Luke 10:1-12 …invites us to consider what we may need to leave behind as we follow God who is active ahead of us. This text was foundational to the work of a Task Force for Reimagining the Episcopal Church …here’s their report: TFREC: Final Report
- Acts of the Apostles in its entirety …a book of the Bible which some would prefer to call “The Acts of God’s Holy Spirit”
County Stories from “Journey Through East Carolina” – these would be especially valuable in preparation for Conversations #2 and #3
Website of the Diocese of East Carolina – exploring this page, and learning about Diocesan ministries, would be especially valuable in preparation for Conversation #3
For Prayer
Book of Common Prayer (1979)…if you don’t have your own copy of the Prayer Book, this online version is free and easy to use, with prayers for Morning and Evening Prayer as well as lots of individual prayers for use in particular situations.
Evening Prayer on Facebook Live…each Wednesday at 7pm beginning on April 14th. This will be hosted on the Diocese’s FB page and led by Bishop Skirving.
