It Just Doesn’t Seem Fair

Are you envious because I am generous?

Jesus tells about laborers in the vineyard, all arriving at different times, yet getting paid the same amount, despite some working many more hours than others.

Are you envious because I am generous?

In a world that tells us that our worth is measured by what we acquire, how are we supposed to respond to what Jesus presents in this parable? We want what we believe we are due. And often, we want for those who have not done their part to not get as much.

God turns this idea upside down, topsy turvey on its head. This parable shows us who God is: unfeignedly kind and generous. God does not care what time we arrive or how much work we’ve done. God who longs to be with us and give to us. This kind of presence, love and generosity sometimes conflicts with our earthly hopes, values and ideals.

It just doesn’t seem fair. And it’s not. Because the world isn’t fair. And in truth, God isn’t fair. There is a dis-symmetry between heaven and earth. Jesus exposes it. God’s justice does not equal fairness. The world gets turned upside down, topsy turvey on its head when Jesus enters the room, and again, when Jesus enters our hearts.
