The Philadelphia Eleven Screening at St. James, Wilmington

January 12 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

St. James ECW is excited and grateful for the opportunity to present the documentary film, The Philadelphia Eleven. Fifty years ago in 1974, eleven women were creating a dramatic breakthrough of the so-called “Stained Glass Ceiling” that gave hope to Christian women everywhere. At the Church of the Advocate, in Philadelphia; a group of eleven brave women were ordained in the Episcopal priesthood-aware that the Episcopal constitution and cannons at the time stated that only men were eligible for priesthood.

On Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 4:00 pm in St. James Sanctuary, we will be showing the documentary “The Philadelphia Eleven. This documentary explores the lives of these remarkable women who succeeded in transforming an age-old institution despite threats to their personal safety and the role of rejection by the church they loved. These women became and remain an inspiration for generations of women in the ministry. The film’s director, Margo Guernsey reminds us that “this a story for us all. It is about how to break barriers with grace and be true to oneself in the process.”

The event is open to all, and ECW’s hope is that we can embrace and highlight the inspirational call these women raised for all women in the ministry. This was a clarion call for the entire Christian Church community.

We hope that you will mark your calendars for Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 4:00 pm in the Sanctuary. We will also have a panel of women priests to discuss their own experiences. Carter Haywood and Marie Moorefield, two of the original eleven will be joining us via zoom. After the film, we will share in a reception in the Great Hall.
