The Holy Gift

Hospitality is written into our sacred story. And it is as important and vital today as it was all those years ago when three strangers stopped by Sarah and Abraham’s tent.

Hospitality, as written into our scripture moves us to something bigger than ourselves: it guides us to see the stranger and to welcome the one that is different from us. And it compels us to recognize this stranger as one who is to be honored, loved, and treated with dignity—because, black, white, brown, male, female, non-binary, immigrant, captive, free, gay, straight, jew or gentile, they bear the image and likeness of God.

Here’s the holy gift: we, like Abraham and Sarah, have the opportunity to welcome the stranger—to bring water, to make cakes that they might not pass us by, that God, disguised as one just wandering by, might come to dwell in our midst.
