The Launch of the Episcopal Ministry of Gabriela Mistral

The Episcopal Farmworker Ministry (EFWM) dates to 1978, and it began as an outreach to farmworkers in Sampson and surrounding counties.  Over time, EFWM grew and began serving others in the community, including seasonal farmworkers who became permanent members of the local community. Many of these people became the core of La Sagrada Familia, which assumed stewardship of the EFWM in the latter part of last year. EFWM had a breadth of ministries that served far more than just farmworkers, as a unique and singular resource in a historically underserved community. As part of the realignment of EFWM, the leadership decided to transfer many other local ministries under the name of a nascent Christian formation ministry chosen as Gabriel Mistral back in 2022.  This ministry is a complementary sister ministry of EFWM, allowing us to better reflect the work we do through prenatal classes, children’s enrichment programs in art, music, and drama, tutoring, school supplies, Christmas gifts, and more. The two ministries overlap in some areas, such as immigration, clothing, and food distribution. Still, the name EFWM obscured much of what we do from many outside observers, so we seek to illuminate it through the sister Episcopal Ministry of Gabriela Mistral, a woman whose work we can also attempt to embody. Join us this Sunday at the launch of El Ministerio Episcopal Gabriela Mistral at the cultural festival at La Sagrada Familia.
