The Economy of God

Jesus tells us about a Sower, who is clueless to the world’s economy. This foolish sower throws seeds on bad soil as well as good, to the high risk soil as well as the safe. In the Sower, we see what God is doing, what God is teaching us. This is not the Economy of Earth. This is the Economy of the God’s Kingdom. This economy isn’t an “if/then” relationship: if you are good to me, then I will be good to you. This economy is a because/therefore relationship. Because I am God’s beloved, therefore I will share what I have with you, expecting nothing in return. Because I am God’s beloved, I will be a good neighbor to you. Because I am God’s beloved, I will scatter seeds of hope and joy and love, trusting that some will take root. God’s economy is the economy of abundance, so rich, so generous, so indiscriminate, that, to the human eye, at least at first glance, it looks absurd. And yet, it is here, in this economy, when we can begin to experience the wildness of God’s ridiculous grace and love. The economy of the God’s Kingdom sets free to just sow those seeds anywhere we like, anywhere we see a need. We begin to realize the growth doesn’t depend on the Sower, it doesn’t depend on you, on me–it depends on God, who like that ridiculously abundant sower, always grows love and life, grace and hope with abandon. In God, regardless of soil or situation, what is good will always grow.
