SUMMARY:The Good Book Club 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join with adults from around the diocese as we embark on our second diocesan-wide Good Book Club! What is the Good Book Club? Launched by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry\, the Good Book Club has sought to engage Episcopalians in intentional scripture study since 2018. Now stewarded by Forward Movement\, this annual study encourages scripture reading providing manageable sized passages for each day. This year’s study during the season following Epiphany\, will explore Ruth and Esther\, books that demonstrated the faithfulness and courage of two remarkable women. “The stories of Ruth and Esther have much to teach us about the Hebrew concept of chesed\, which means sacred kindness\, as well as the willingness to be in sacrificial relationship with loved ones and our communities.” Mark your calendars to join the Good Book Club with daily scripture readings\, reflections\, and teachings\, from Epiphany\, Friday\, January 6\, to Shrove Tuesday\, February 21\, 2023. SUMMARY:The Boar’s Head & Yule Log Festival at St. Mary’s\, Kinston
DESCRIPTION:St. Mary’s\, Kinston has been offering the Boar’s Head Festival as its annual gift to the community since 1990\, the 650th anniversary of the festival. This Boar’s Head tradition originated at Queen’s College\, Oxford\, England\, in 1340\, and is probably the oldest continuing Christmas festival. All are invited to the performances of The Boar’s Head & Yule Log Festival are at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday\, January 8\, 2023 and mark St. Mary’s\, Kinston’s annual retelling of the tale. Entrance to performance is free and open to everyone. There will be a free-will offering. Following the 5:00 p.m. performance is a ticketed banquet. But why\, you may wonder\, a “boar’s head”?! The pageant of killing the boar is ancient: The Romans served boar as the first course at their banquets. As the Gospel spread throughout Europe\, the boar’s head came to represent evil’s ultimate defeat by the power of God through Jesus Christ. The pageant itself follows a similar narrative arc. Beginning with a secular celebration as all of the characters gather for a feast\, the story dramatically shifts to telling the story of Immanuel: how God became with us in the person of Jesus. Shepherds\, angels\, and wise men soon join the more than 150 other people dressed up as peasants and nobility\, beggars and kings\, clergy and cooks. Everyone in attendance can relate to one or many of the characters and find his or herself uniquely placed in the end at the Christ child’s manger\, where all lives are made equal and no one is left unchanged. Following the 5:00 p.m. performance\, a delicious banquet is offered. The banquet offers a full meal of wonderful offerings\, including wine\, all set in the king’s decorated hall. For the banquet\, you will need to purchase a ticket\, which costs $40 per person. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased from the church office or online. At the “Fund” drop-down menu\, go to “Boar’s Head Contribution.” If you purchase tickets online\, please be sure to provide your email address and include your telephone number in the memo line. SUMMARY:The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health in Your Spiritual Life at St. John’s\, Fayetteville
DESCRIPTION:The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll “Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health in Your Spiritual Life” Thursday\, January 26\, 2023 Reception 6:00 PM\, Conversation 7:00 PM Join The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll\, with the Episcopal Shoppe at St. John’s\, Fayetteville\, as she discusses her latest book and how the world and Christianity is changing. How do we know if we are being faithful? How do we know if we are practicing our faith adequately? Just as doctors measure vital signs when determining the health of the body\, so we must learn to recognize the vital signs of the life of the spirit as we move into a post-Christian age. She will discuss the four vital signs: God\, Give\, Grow\, and Group\, and ways to measure these vital signs of faith so we might improve our spiritual health and find again the essence of our life together\, the breath of God in each of us. Kate Moorehead Carroll is the tenth Dean of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Jacksonville\, Florida. She is the author of eight books\, including Angels of the Bible\, Resurrecting Easter\, and Healed: The Truth about Mary Magdalene.
